Finding connection and healing through community

29 May 2026

Twenty-five years of hard work and family

For the past 25 years, Jatinder and Jaswinder have called Australia home. After moving here where all of their children chose to study and build a future, they dedicated themselves to running their business and raising their family. Life was busy, and over the years they rarely had time to connect with the wider community or take part in social activities.

The beginning of a new chapter

Everything changed after Jatinder underwent cancer surgery. During his recovery, hospital staff at Monash introduced the couple to SMRC and encouraged them to join SMRC’s social groups to help them focus on healing and connection rather than isolation. What began as a small step towards recovery soon became a life-changing journey.

Through SMRC, Jatinder and Jaswinder found friendship, confidence, and a sense of connection they had been missing for many years. They are now involved in several programs, including art, gardening, multicultural, and carers groups. These activities have helped them meet new people, reconnect with their culture, and feel part of a much larger network within the community.

Why SMRC means so much to them

They describe SMRC as one of the best experiences they have had in Australia, saying it brought peace, happiness, and support into their lives at a time when they needed it most. They also hope more people become aware of SMRC’s services, especially culturally diverse communities who may face language barriers or may not know they are eligible to join.

“People will definitely come to you if they know about your services.” Jaswinder

At SMRC, our programs are designed for the people in our community. Our multicultural workforce understands the cultural values, needs, and experiences of the people we support, helping create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

Thank you, Jatinder and Jaswinder, for sharing your story with us. We look forward to continuing this journey together. One step at a time, one story at a time.
