Building stronger communities through connection, trust and opportunity

From Noble Park to Member of Parliament

During a recent visit to The Hive, we had the opportunity to speak with Lee Tarlamis MP about the experiences that shaped his commitment to community and the importance of organisations like SMRC in supporting migrants, refugees and culturally diverse communities across Melbourne’s South East.

Growing up in Noble Park, Lee described how diversity was a normal part of everyday life. Surrounded by people from different cultures, languages and backgrounds, he witnessed firsthand the generosity and resilience that exist within multicultural communities.

From a very early age, I saw people reaching out and wanting to help others

Through volunteering at a local neighbourhood house, Lee met people facing hardship, trauma and significant life challenges. What stood out most to him was their determination not only to rebuild their own lives but also to support and inspire others.

As we discussed his work across one of Australia’s most culturally diverse regions, Lee spoke about the strength that comes from communities working together. Despite different backgrounds, faiths and experiences, he has consistently seen people unite to support one another and build a shared sense of belonging.

People trust SMRC because they know help is there when they need it most

Lee highlighted SMRC as a trusted organisation that is deeply connected to the community it serves. Because of these strong relationships, people know they have somewhere to turn when they need support, information or guidance.

SMRC is really connected and embedded within the community, they have that level of trust. People will come to them and reach out when they are in need

He also acknowledged SMRC’s ability to respond to growing community needs by creating programs that empower people to overcome challenges, connect with others and thrive.

Communities are strongest when people support one another

Looking to the future, Lee emphasised the importance of creating stronger connections between different cultural communities. By creating opportunities for people to learn from one another and celebrate shared values, organisations like SMRC help build understanding, reduce misinformation and strengthen social connection.

Our conversation with Lee reinforced the importance of trust, connection and community-led support. With the support of our community, SMRC will continue creating opportunities for people to connect and thrive.
