Supporting CALD women in the workforce every day

11 March 2025

International Women’s Day has passed, but the need for gender equality in employment is ongoing. Women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds face unique barriers to finding work, despite having valuable skills, international qualifications, and years of experience.

A recent SBS article highlights a concerning study that found women with foreign accents are seen as less employable than men with foreign accents or non-accented speakers. This bias in hiring disproportionately affects CALD women, making it even harder for them to secure jobs that match their qualifications.

“At SMRC, we see firsthand how employment empowers women and strengthens communities,” says SMRC CEO Jim Mullan. “Through our Employment Xchange program, we support CALD job seekers by connecting them with training, mentoring, and employment pathways. We also work with employers to promote inclusive hiring practices and unlock the benefits of a diverse workforce.”

Jim underscores the urgency for change: “Employers must take action to break down these barriers and build inclusive workplaces that value diversity.”

How employers can support CALD women in the workforce

  • Recognise international experience and qualifications – Global skills bring fresh perspectives and innovation.
  • Use inclusive hiring practices – Simplify job ads, remove jargon, and ensure diverse recruitment panels.
  • Address hiring bias – Employers must prioritise skills and experience over perceived ‘fit’.
  • Invest in mentorship and pathways into employment – Networking, coaching, and training can create new opportunities.
  • Foster a workplace culture that embraces diversity – Diverse teams are more productive, creative, and resilient.

While International Women’s Day sparks important conversations, real change happens through daily actions. Employers must commit to removing bias in hiring and recognising the strengths of CALD women all year round.

SMRC’s Employment Xchange program is helping to create inclusive employment opportunities for CALD communities. Learn more about how we can support you as a job seeker or employer and join us in building a future where all women can thrive.
