HIPPY families begin a year of learning, wellbeing and connection
Families in SMRC’s Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) have come together for their first Family Gathering of the year, marking the beginning of another exciting learning journey for children and parents.
This year, 56 children and their families are taking part in HIPPY at Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC). This includes 31 children enrolled in the first year of the program and 25 children continuing into their second year.
The gathering brought together families from both the Age 3 and Age 4 cohorts for a morning filled with play, learning, wellbeing and community connection.
Building confidence through play-based learning

During the morning, Age 3 families explored five engaging play stations led by the HIPPY team. Fourteen parents attended with their children, who took part in hands-on activities designed to support confidence, curiosity and early learning.
Families also shared food and stayed for an enrichment session, creating opportunities to connect with other parents and build new friendships.
These moments of shared learning are an important part of HIPPY, helping parents support their child’s development at home while strengthening their connection to community.
Supporting parent wellbeing
Parents in the Age 4 cohort took part in an interactive wellbeing session delivered by Mahisha from the Water Well Project.
The session created space for open and respectful conversations about mental health, including the normal spectrum of emotions and how to recognise when professional support may be helpful. Parents also practised relaxation techniques and four-square deep breathing exercises, giving them practical strategies to support their own mental health and wellbeing.

A strong start for HIPPY families
The first Family Gathering highlighted the strong sense of community growing within SMRC’s HIPPY program.
Through play-based learning, parent support and wellbeing activities, HIPPY helps families build confidence, connection and skills that support children’s early development.
SMRC looks forward to supporting the children and families throughout the year as they continue learning, growing and connecting together.
