SMRC Social Support Groups offer opportunities for social interaction to people from a culturally and linguistically diverse background who are living at home.
Participants are encouraged and supported to live a healthy lifestyle through physical activity, nutrition education and developing emotional wellbeing through friendships and social contact.
Activities within the Social Support Groups Program include:
- relaxing chair-based exercises
- arts and crafts
- interactive games
- music activities
- tabletop games to suit individual interests
- information sessions and monthly outings.
There is a strong tie between social support and measures of wellbeing. Our Social Support Groups nurture a sense of belonging, security and community. Those who have close personal relationships cope better with various stresses including bereavement and illness, while the Program also helps in keeping participants active and alert.
Activities range from centre-based programs to outings and are offered Monday to Friday. There is a fee for these services, starting at $7.50. Outings include visits to The Hive Outdoor Garden or taking part in one of our exercise programs.
Languages supported include:
- Filipino
- Spanish
- Polish
- Turkish
- Serbian
- Romanian
- Cambodian
- Chinese
- Other mixed culture groups
- Wednesday men’s group
While language groups are language specific, we welcome anyone to join any group that interests them.
