A Special Visit to The Hive
Arnis and Robin have always shared a love of gardening, so visiting The Hive to see the impact of their contribution felt especially meaningful. This wasn’t just a tour, it was a chance to experience, up close, how their support had shaped the space.
The Hive Program is a social support program designed for seniors, providing the opportunity to come together, enjoy healthy and nutritious meals, engage in physical exercise, and of course, participate in gardening! It also offers a space for individuals to connect, form new friendships, and build a supportive community.

Exploring the garden, together
From the moment they arrived, the atmosphere stood out. There was a warmth in the way participants and staff welcomed Arnis and Robin. As they were shown around by SMRC’s CEO Jim Mullan, the difference made by the new storage container quickly became clear. The site felt more open, organised, and safer. Gardening tools were stored properly, refreshments had their own space, and the greenhouse had been reclaimed for its true purpose, growing and housing plants. These changes didn’t just improve functionality they made the environment more inviting for everyone who spends time there.
Robin moved along the garden paths with the help of a walker, supported by Jim and Arnis as they went. Together they explored the variety of plants, fruit, and vegetables, while also taking in the different structures and tools that helped keep the program running smoothly.

Meeting the staff and participants
During the visit, Arnis and Robin spent time speaking with support workers Aroon and Emma, whose passion for the program was clear, as they spoke enthusiastically about the additional shed and how the new space has allowed them to better organise their work and spend more time in the garden.
They also met Mary, a regular participant who shared how much she values coming each Friday, especially for the social connection. Now in her third year, she spoke with genuine enthusiasm about continuing for many more.
“I look forward to Fridays every week,” Mary said.
“It’s not just about the gardening, it’s the people. This place makes you feel socially connected.”
Upgrade plans for 2026
While the visit was overwhelmingly positive, it also highlighted ongoing challenges. One of the most noticeable was the distance to the bathroom facilities, which required crossing the carpark to the community centre. For someone like Robin, using a walker, it is achievable but not without difficulty, and it emphasis how this could be a significant barrier for others, particularly those using wheelchairs or with limited mobility.
Encouragingly, solutions are already underway. Jim shared, that plans for an extension to The Hive have been approved, with accessible bathroom facilities currently in development. These improvements will take time and continued support, but they represent an important step toward making the space more inclusive for all.
For Arnis and Robin, the visit reinforced something simple but powerful: Every contribution has a tangible impact.
From improved safety and organisation to a stronger sense of community and belonging, The Hive continues to grow as a place where people can connect, participate, and thrive.
