A decade long journey at SMRC

Currently a Case Manager with the Diverse Care Team at SMRC, Sharon’s journey with the organisation spans more than a decade. Before taking on her current role, she spent 10 years with the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) Team, supporting migrants and refugees as they built new lives in Australia. In 2024, she returned to SMRC, drawn back by its people, its purpose, and its community spirit.

During her time with the SETS team, Sharon worked across a range of programs that helped empower newly arrived individuals and families. From coordinating learning initiatives to supporting students on placement. One of her proudest moments was with SMRC’s Homework Club, a program that continues to grow, with over 96 students registered this year alone.

Sharon’s return

Since returning as a Case Manager in 2024, Sharon has witnessed the remarkable impact of SMRC’s Support for Carers Program. She recalls one client describing the service as a “blessing.” The program provided professional care for their elderly mother, allowing the family to focus on their own wellbeing, knowing their loved one was in safe and compassionate hands.

“Stories like these,” Sharon says, “are what motivate me to come to work every day, to keep advocating for the support that migrant and refugee families need to feel connected, confident, and at home in our community.”

Recognising the challenges

While Sharon celebrates the program’s successes, she also recognises the challenges. Funding for care exist but reaching CALD clients remains difficult. Many families are unaware of available services, and language and cultural barriers often mean they carry the full burden of care themselves.

With more funding for outreach and awareness, SMRC can extend its reach, ensuring more families understand and access the support they deserve. Sharon also sees transport and accessibility as major barriers. Additional funding for these areas would allow more individuals to participate in community groups and reduce social isolation.
