Driving Program
SMRC’s driving program supports refugees and humanitarian entrants in gaining their Victorian driver’s license, helping them become independent and confident drivers.
About the Driving Program
The Driving Program provides essential knowledge on road rules, traffic laws, and safe driving practices, supporting participants throughout the licensing process. This program helps participants:
- Understand Victorian road laws and traffic regulations
- Prepare for the learner permit test through guided sessions
- Develop safe driving habits with professional lessons
- Enhance job opportunities by obtaining a license
- Gain independence and participate in community life
The driving program includes six information sessions and provides up to 20 professional driving lessons for eligible participants.
Please note: Due to high demand and a long waitlist, SMRC is not taking new applications. Please check back in January 2026.
Who can join?
This program is open to:
- Refugees and humanitarian entrants
- Eligible visa holders who are not Australian citizens
- Participants with a minimum of level 2 English proficiency
- Individuals who hold a valid learner permit
English for Driving
- When: Monday and Thursday 10.00am – 12.00pm, during school terms
- Where: SMRC, Level 1
- Cost: $20 per term
The Driving Program is supported by funding from the Australian Government through the Department of Social Services under the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) Program
