Support for Carers mini expo connects with the Turkish community in Hallam

28 March 2025

Raising awareness and celebrating connection

On Tuesday 25 March 2025 SMRC’s Support for Carers Program delivered its fifth Getting to Know You mini expo—this time connecting with the Turkish community at the Turkish Senior Club in Hallam.

The aim of the event was to introduce culturally relevant services to community members and raise awareness of the support available to unpaid carers. Many people who provide care for a loved one do not see themselves as carers, and this event offered a safe and welcoming space to learn more.

A strong community response

The event was well-attended, with 65 participants joining on the day. SMRC was pleased to register 12 new carers, ensuring they are now connected to the right supports to care for their loved ones—and themselves. To ensure the event was accessible, a Turkish interpreter was present to support participants with language needs and to make sure key messages were clearly delivered. To round out the day, participants enjoyed interactive wellness activities, including Movement with Music and Tai Chi sessions, which were a hit—bringing energy, fun, and relaxation to the event.

Services that came together to help

The expo welcomed a range of service providers who spoke directly with community members and shared important information about how to access support:

  • Dementia Australia
  • NDIS
  • Estia Health
  • Alfred Health – Carer Services
  • SMRC – Diverse Care
  • Services Australia

Each stall gave attendees the chance to ask questions, hear about available programs, and feel empowered to take the next step in their caring journey.

Continuing our support for carers

The Getting to Know You mini expo series reflects SMRC’s commitment to reaching carers from all backgrounds and ensuring that no one feels alone in their caring role. By working closely with community groups and offering support in the right language and cultural context, SMRC helps more people access the care they need.

SMRC’s Support for Carers program is funded by the Victorian Government through the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
