Supporting carers with free in-home respite
Government-funded support at no cost to carers
At SMRC, we understand how important it is for carers to have time to rest and recharge. That’s why, after reviewing our services under the Support for Carers and Additional Respite initiative, we are introducing a new In-Home Respite Program.
This program is here to give you the chance to take a well-earned break, while knowing that your loved one will continue to receive safe, compassionate, and high-quality care in the comfort of their own home.
We’re proud to share that this program is fully funded by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH), which means it is completely free of charge for carers.

Why in-home respite matters
Caring for a loved one can be deeply rewarding but also physically and emotionally demanding. Many carers face burnout, isolation, and limited opportunities for rest or personal time.
In-home respite provides carers with peace of mind, knowing their loved one is safe and supported while they take time to recharge.
In Home Respite Program offers flexible, personalised support tailored to each family’s needs:
- Care provided in the comfort of the client’s own home
- Short-term breaks for carers to attend appointments or rest
- Experienced, trained staff delivering respectful and culturally sensitive care
- Activities and companionship for the person being cared for, promoting engagement and wellbeing

Support tailored to you
SMRC will work with carers to create a care plan that reflects the needs of both the carer and the person receiving care. This ensures respite support is meaningful, safe, and beneficial for the whole family.
This program helps carers maintain their own health and wellbeing while continuing in their caring role. By providing regular breaks, in-home respite strengthens families, reduces stress, and supports long-term sustainability of care at home.
