Federal pledge supports permanent home for SMRC

9 April 2025

A commitment to community infrastructure

SMRC was honoured to welcome several special guests for an important announcement at our Dandenong headquarters. On Wednesday, 8 April 2025, Member for Bruce the Honourable Julian Hill MP, Attorney-General of Australia the Honourable Mark Dreyfus, and Member for Holt Ms Cassandra Fernando MP visited to announce a $1.25 million election pledge to support a permanent home for SMRC—should the Labour Government be re-elected.

This exciting announcement recognises SMRC’s important role in the region and our long-standing work supporting migrants, refugees, and their families across the South East.

Supporting inclusion and resilience

The pledge was one of two announced on the day by the Labour Government to support vital multicultural infrastructure in Dandenong. The second commitment is $600,000 towards the Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) and their goal to establish a youth hub in the area.

Both pledges demonstrate a strong commitment to community services that promote inclusion, wellbeing, and connection. If realised, this funding would be transformational—allowing SMRC to expand services, create a welcoming space for clients and staff, and strengthen our impact in the community for generations to come.
