Farewell tribute to Mr Anton Nadarajah

7 October 2025

It is with deep respect and heartfelt appreciation that we honour the life and legacy of Mr. Anton Nadarajah.

Anton and his family migrated to Australia from Sri Lanka in 1984, following the civil war in their homeland. Just six weeks after his arrival, Anton secured employment with a Swiss company as Manager of Shipping and Imports — a testament to his strong work ethic and determination. After his retirement in 1992, Anton continued his life of service as a volunteer teacher with AMES, supporting new migrants as they began their own journeys in Australia.

In 1993, Anton joined the SMRC Committee of Management as a founding member, marking the beginning of nearly two decades of extraordinary contribution to our organisation and community. Over his 18 years of service, Anton held the positions of Secretary, Public Officer, and Executive Member, roles he fulfilled with utmost professionalism, dedication, and integrity.

Throughout his tenure, Anton maintained warm and respectful relationships with both board and staff members. He was a person of principle and humility, always willing to lend his time, expertise, and wisdom for the benefit of others. His exceptional service was recognised through several awards from the State Government, an Australia Day Award from Anthony Byrne MP, and Life Membership at the SMRC after 15 years of voluntary service. He also proudly served as a Justice of the Peace, further demonstrating his deep commitment to community service.

Anton was a man who always gave more than what was asked. He consistently went above and beyond for the SMRC — attending functions, supporting initiatives, and contributing tirelessly without seeking recognition. His presence was constant, his passion unwavering, and his belief in the mission of the SMRC truly inspiring.

He displayed altruism of the highest order, working selflessly for the betterment of migrant and refugee communities in this region. His commitment to fairness, compassion, and service has left a lasting imprint on all who knew him.

Anton will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements but for his humility, kindness, and generosity of spirit. He was — and will always remain — a valued member of the SMRC family, a trusted colleague, and a dear friend to many.

May his memory continue to inspire us, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.
