Retreat for carers in Phillip Island
Written by Sharon R – Coordinator Carer Services
Caring for loved ones is intrinsically rewarding but can also be overwhelming at times. Six carers from the Support for Carers Program (SCP) had the opportunity to take a break from their caring duties in July and attend a weekend retreat at Kaloha Resort in Cowes, Philip Island. This retreat was a chance for them to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy some well-deserved time for themselves. Despite the cold and grey weather, the carers embraced the chance to unwind and enjoyed a peaceful walk around the resort. Each carer was treated to a relaxing massage, allowing them to release tension and stress.
Delightful experiences aplenty
In the evening, the group dined at an Italian restaurant, where they indulged in a variety of delicious Italian dishes and desserts. The warm and inviting atmosphere of the restaurant provided the perfect setting for the carers to enjoy each other’s company and share stories.
The following day, the carers had a fantastic time exploring local shops. They particularly enjoyed op shopping and visiting antique shops, discovering unique treasures and sharing laughter. The retreat continued with a hearty lunch at the Phillip Island RSL, where the carers enjoyed a delicious meal and the welcoming environment of the club.
A highlight of the trip was the visit to the Chocolate Factory, where the carers delighted in the sweet treats and learned about the chocolate-making process. The experience brought smiles and joy to everyone involved.
Gratitude and connection among carers
Throughout the retreat, the carers expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to take a break from their responsibilities. They felt appreciated and cared for, which was evident in their heartfelt thanks. This retreat not only provided physical relaxation but also mental and emotional rejuvenation.
The retreat was also a wonderful opportunity for the carers to meet new people and create lasting friendships. They valued the chance to connect, share their experiences, and understand what other carers go through. As one carer summed up, it was great to “connect, share, and see what other carers go through. It provided a mental, physical, and emotional break.”
This retreat was a testament to the importance of taking time for self-care and the positive impact it can have on those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
This retreat was delivered with funding support from the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
