Making carers visible

29 October 2026

Carers play an important role in the lives of families and communities, often putting the needs of others before their own.

To mark Carers Week 2026, SMRC brought carers together for Care for a Carer: Making Carers Visible, a celebration focused on recognising their contribution and creating an opportunity to connect, recharge and enjoy some time for themselves.

Throughout the day, carers took part in a range of wellbeing and social activities, including Zumba, massages, games and caricature drawings. More than simply a day of activities, the event offered a chance to meet others, share experiences and take a well-earned break from the responsibilities of caring.

Creating something together

A highlight of the day was the creation of SMRC’s Community Tree.

Carers were invited to add their thumbprints to the tree, with each print becoming a colourful leaf. As more leaves were added, the tree became a simple but powerful reflection of the individuals who make up our caring community and the connection and strength they create together.

The activity also captured the message at the heart of the event: every carer matters and deserves to be seen and recognised.

Carers Week was an opportunity to turn the focus towards the people who spend so much of their time supporting others.

SMRC thanks all the carers who joined us for the celebration, and carers across our community for the difference they make every day.

If you support someone who is frail aged or someone with a disability, medical condition, mental illness, or dementia, you may be eligible for 20 hours of carers support per year including flexible carer respite.
