Your Rights as an Aged Care Client

The new Aged Care Act 2024 will put the rights of older people first. It includes a Statement of Rights for older people accessing aged care services. Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre wants you to feel safe, respected and heard. You have the right to feel safe, respected and in control of your care.

Safe and Quality Care

You have the right to receive safe, high-quality services at all times.

To Be Treated with Dignity and Respect

You must be treated with kindness, fairness and cultural respect.

Freedom from Abuse, Neglect and Discrimination

You have the right to be safe from harm, including physical, emotional, financial and sexual abuse.

Choice and Control

You have the right to make decisions about your care and how it is delivered.

To Be Informed

You have the right to clear information about your services, your rights and your options.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Your personal information must be kept private and handled with care.

Cultural, Linguistic and Spiritual Respect

Your identity, beliefs and background must be respected.

To Have Support or an Advocate

You can have a support person or advocate help you at any time.

To Speak Up Without Fear

You can raise concerns or complaints safely. Your identity will be protected and you will not be treated unfairly.

How to Make a Complaint

You can talk to any Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre staff member, call our office, or make a written complaint.
