Southern Migrant & Refugee Centre (SMRC) held their AGM recently, which saw the election of a new Board of Directors headed by returning Chair, Mr Brian Oates.
Elections were held for 5 positions as a result of the retirement of Mr Hafez Abdul Wahab (Deputy Chair and board member since 1997) and Mr Ismail Demiri (board member since 2001) and the opening of three other positions.
The new Board members are:

Mr Brian Oates said, “I am thrilled with the opportunity to return as chair to SMRC after stepping down for 12 months. I am pleased to see further progression of the organisation including many innovative social enterprise programs that provide pathways to employment for our clients.” Mr Oates said.
“I am looking forward to leading our diverse new board to focus on robust governance to ensure the sustainability of SMRC into the future” said Mr Oates.
SMRC has been providing social support services to refugees and migrants for over 26 years. Their work in making stronger communities involves social and economic participation programs and health and wellbeing initiatives. SMRC service delivery takes on a life course approach, specifically ensuring the inclusion of vulnerable people and groups such as people with different abilities and the elderly.
With their headquarters in Dandenong, SMRC operates from 6 sites in the south east with outreach at 42 additional locations.
